Journey to Jinnah Hospital Karachi
Jinnah Hospital Karachi began its journey in 1930 at the Medical Corps Hospital, with the sole purpose of providing medical assistance to military personnel. It was renamed the British General Hospital in 1942 and remained so until 1947. A 100-bed hospital with all the basic facilities.
قیام After the establishment of Pakistan in 1947, the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was requested to approve a loan for a hospital in his name, which he graciously approved on the condition that it be converted into a hospital. To be opened People. Thus the Medical Corps Hospital / British General Hospital was renamed Jinnah Central Hospital (JCH).
As the capital of Pakistan at the time, Karachi became home to thousands of federal government employees who settled here with their families. The Government of Pakistan decided to set up JCH as a fully equipped hospital to meet their medical needs, as the existing Civil Hospital was insufficient for this purpose.
In 1952, Dow Medical College (DMC) was affiliated with JCH. In August 1954, the National Assembly of Pakistan authorized the Basic Medical Sciences Institute (BMSI), as basic science education was considered important for the establishment of a center for higher medical education. Since its inception at DMC, Karachi, the Government of Pakistan has converted the site for the development of BMSI into a building at JCH. Indiana University began the BMSI with its staff, led by Dr. Paul A. Nicole, Professor of Physiology, who deserves great credit for completing this assignment. He was assisted by Dr. Osgud de Purdel, Professor of Pharmacology, and Dr. Rola Ann Harger, Professor of Biochemistry. With six departments and laboratories, including anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology, BMSI thus established itself as the most advanced medical institution of its time. The official opening ceremony was held on April 11, 1959. Speakers on the occasion included President of Pakistan General Muhammad Ayub Khan, President of Indiana University Dr. Herman B. Wells and Director General of Health Col. M. Jaffer.
The opening ceremony was a wonderful event. The first class of students was added on June 1, 1959. In 1963, the merger of all the units of BMSI and JCH led to the formation of JPMC headed by a Director. The JPMC, thus established, consists of a cluster of buildings spread over 148 acres. In addition to treating patients, the main purpose of this institution became higher medical education, training and research. Then, over time, more buildings were built to meet the growing needs of various developing properties. It can now proudly claim to be the largest and best equipped public sector hospital in Pakistan, employing highly educated staff in a variety of capacities, ready to provide quality healthcare to patients. In the process, JPMC also provides high quality training to medical graduates, nurses and technicians and conducts meaningful research in medical and basic medical sciences.
